P.S. I'm surprised you didn't mention The Siege of Jadotville movie alongside Conor Cruise O'Brien - great flick!

Appreciate it, Adam. Yes, I probably should have mentioned The Siege—if this were a fuller essay on O'Brien (and perhaps I'll be inclined to write such a thing when I visit Ireland and follow his trail there) I would have treated the controversies over his time in the Congo at greater length.

Really recommend the documentary which came out at the end of last year, Soundtrack to a Coup d'etat which details American and Belgian interventions (through trying to co-opt the UN) in the Congo and in Katanga in particular. It weaves in music and is really compelling, with extracts from O'Brien's book To Katanga and Back throughout. He also appears in a montage...
