Yindyamarra Podcast #18: C. S. Lewis's Magic: A Walk Around Magdalen College
Wait for the tolling of the bell...
At this point, I should let readers know that I also co-host the Yindyamarra Podcast with my old friend, Stan Grant, from Australia. I will be posting episodes from that podcast here from time to time, as well. Stan and his wife Tracey Holmes—a leading sports journalist and writer—visited me in Oxford this past week: For Stan is in England to write a novel.
Today, Stan and I took a walk around Magdalen College (founded in 1458, not 1468! apologies for the live mess-up of dates). We were so moved by the beauty of our surroundings, that we decided to record a walking podcast, then and there. So please excuse the wind. We just started talking about: C. S. Lewis and “The Abolition of Man”; the limits of the human; what the imagination is amidst blood and war; and what it means to feel oneself a relic in the modern world, as Stan and I both do, though I expect in different ways.
More than anything, this podcast remembers a wonderful afternoon shared with a great mentor who has done so much to shape my thinking about ideas and the importance of the moral imagination.
Oh, and we heard the tolling of the bells, I hope you hear them, too…
